Epilepsy Association of the Big Bend

Epilepsy is a neurological condition characterized by recurrent seizures. Currently, epilepsy and seizures affect more than 360,000 Floridians, of which 84,600 are children. More than 3 million Americans of all ages have epilepsy, and approximately 200,000 new cases are diagnosed each year. Ten percent of the American population will experience a seizure in their lifetime and three percent will develop epilepsy by age 75. According to the Department of Veteran Affairs, more than fifty percent of returning soldiers from Iraq experienced traumatic brain injury, which is the leading cause of epilepsy.
